Patient Led Clinical Education ©

This novel approach involves people attending a group session on medicines, and then having the option of reviewing their medicines individually in a 3/4-hour session with two health professionals (e.g. a prescriber and a pharmacist).

We provide people with their own notes in the form of a written action plan, which they can share with clinicians. We also give advice on trusted sources of information, on questions to ask doctors and we jointly develop group specific resource pages as a ‘spin off’ to this work. A generic medicines resource has also been set up. An example of a group specific resource page can be found here:

This work is published on the NICE web site as a shared learning example:

‘Steve demonstrates a high level of both personal and professional integrity. His clarity on work tasks have led to the deadline completion of a huge project he has been commissioned to support to get off the ground in Cornwall. His skills from his varied past in health, IT and within mental health with (non-medical prescribing) NMP made him a perfect candidate to deliver on task in relation to Cornwall Drug and Alcohol teams prescribing project. I would strongly recommend.’

Hazel Roberts, Team Leader Cornwall Drug & Alcohol Team (2012)
